根据IDC的预测，2025年，全球物联网设备数量将达到416亿，物联网设备每年产生的物联网数据总量将达到79.4万亿千兆比特，如此巨大的数据量靠的就是无线通信模块来进行传输的。 作为连接物联网感知层和网络层的关键环节，所有物联网感知层终端产生的设备数据需要通过无线通信模块汇聚至网络层，进而通过云端管理平台对设备进行远程管控。无线通信模块属于底层硬件环节，具备相当的不可替代性，和物联网终端保持着一对一的关系。
以功能来区分，无线模组可以分为通信模组和定位模组，不过通信模组的应用范围更广，有些物联网终端是不需要定位功能的。
